Yeast infections are extremely common but can really cause a lot of suffering and embarrassment. Here is a yeast infection FAQ list to help you understand what it is and how you can deal with it.

What Is A Yeast Infection?

Yeast is normally found in the body of healthy men and women. An infection occurs when the body ' s delicate balance is upset causing the yeast to overgrow and cause an infection. It is caused by a yeast called Candida that lives in your gut.

How Do They Occur?

Yeast infections can occur in moist places on the body, most commonly the vaginal area. What a lot of people don ' t know is that yeast is normally located on many people ' s skin. This means a yeast infection can occur on different parts of the body including skin folds, anus and mouth.

What Are The Common Causes?

There are many yeast infection causes. The most common though are a weakened immune system through stress, pregnancy and antibiotics. Some antibiotics can lead to an overgrowth of Candida because they can also kill the good bacteria that live in your body which helps to balance the yeast. Another cause can be a high sugar diet or blood sugar levels. Because the yeasts feed on sugar this can cause the yeast naturally present in your body to overgrow and multiply.

What Are Some Yeast Infection Symptoms?

There are a few main symptoms that are associated with a yeast infection. The main one is a cottage cheese like discharge from the vagina. This is usually odorless but can hold a scent similar to bread. Other symptoms include redness, swelling and itching of the vulva and general vaginal irritation. Some people may also experience a burning sensation during intercourse and urination. Be aware some of the symptoms are very similar to a sexually transmitted infection so it is also a good idea if you are unsure to see your doctor.

How to Prevent Yeast Infections?

The most important thing to remember is that yeast infections grow in warm, moist environment. Therefore make sure you dry yourself properly after showering or swimming. Avoid wearing tight clothing and fabrics such as nylon which trap moisture. Scented health care products and fragrant rich detergents can cause a reaction in women which can lead to a possible yeast infection. Wear cotton underwear especially at night when going to bed or try not wearing any underwear if possible.
